Tight integration between CatDV, Facilis, and StorageDNA systems simplifies the task of finding needed content.
Johns Hopkins Medicine Streamlines Video Production with CatDV
Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, is one of the leading healthcare systems in the United States. It unites physicians and scientists of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with the organizations, health professionals, and facilities of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.
JHM uses video extensively to promote its work and share important clinical information. The organization produces patient success stories, doctor profiles, research, Q&As about specific disease and treatment options, and community outreach programs. To create all of these video assets, the Johns Hopkins Marketing and Communications video team includes videographers, editors, as well as animation designers, and outside freelancers.
Originally, the team used collection of individual external hard drives to store content and transport media to various team members. Drives were frequently sent through the mail and carried to and from the studio and the hospital campus. But the team wanted to avoid the physical transportation of drives and eliminate the time needed to make copies of media for different team members.
Replacing External Hard Drives with Shared Storage
The JHM video team implemented a Facilis shared storage system to eliminate the time-consuming and labor-intensive process of sharing content with external hard drives. The Facilis system offers multiple connectivity options, including both Fibre Channel and Ethernet. The shared storage environment is connected to a StorageDNA solution for backup and archiving. The Facilis system also supports Wi-Fi connections through a secure VPN, allowing authorized team members to access volumes remotely.
Simplifying Asset Management with CatDV
The JHM team selected CatDV for media asset management. CatDV helps organizations manage large volumes of content and collaborate more effectively. CatDV is tightly integrated with the Facilis shared storage network. For example, editors can use Facilis FastTracker to find B-roll or master versions of cataloged content without having to switch interfaces. Since the initial installation, the shared storage environment—with its integrated asset management system and archiving—has become the hub for a variety of key systems at JHM.
